London Bridge Has Fallen Down—But It Keeps Coming Back

London Bridge has collapsed or been damaged numerous times throughout history, possibly inspiring the famous nursery rhyme, yet it has endured in some form for nearly 2,000 years. Despite repeated destruction and rebuilding, a bridge has stood in essentially the same spot on the Thames for two millennia—a testament to London's resilience and continuity.

Actually, London Bridge has fallen down loads of times—and the nursery rhyme you sang as a kid might be more historically accurate than you ever imagined. The familiar tune likely refers to the time Viking leader Olaf Haraldsson pulled the bridge down in 1014, a dramatic episode that inspired a thirteenth-century Old Norse poem translating as "London Bridge is broken down."

But that was far from the only collapse. London Bridge kept partially falling down for centuries after the Romans left Britain in the fifth century. It crumbled in 1281 (thanks to ice damage), again in 1309, 1425, and 1437. Then came a devastating fire in the seventeenth century that tore through the structure. For a bridge that's immortalised in a children's song about falling down, it certainly lived up to its reputation.

Here's the remarkable part, though: despite its Jenga-like tendencies, the medieval London Bridge—complete with houses, shops, and a bustling little community perched right on top of it—did last for 600 years, until it was finally demolished in 1831. That's six centuries of survival, collapse, repair, and reinvention. Not bad for a structure that keeps "falling down."

Tower Bridge, London

And Roy Stephenson, head of archaeological collections at the Museum of London, has another positive take. Despite replacements and repairs, he points out, "there's been a bridge in pretty much the same place in London for nearly 2,000 years. Now that's awesome."

Think about that for a moment. Nearly two millennia. Romans, Vikings, medieval merchants, Tudor traders, Victorian engineers—they all crossed the same stretch of the Thames, generation after generation. The bridge has been rebuilt, redesigned, and resurrected countless times, but it never truly disappeared. London Bridge may fall down, but it never stays down. And that, more than any nursery rhyme, is the real story.
