This collection picks seven waterfalls in Washington State that are especially beautiful, offering varied terrain, dramatic drops, and compelling geology. The descriptions below also include what makes each place memorable, and some practical notes for visiting.

1. Rainbow Falls

Located in a remote portion of the state, reachable only by boat or air travel, then by bus.
The waterfall drops about 312 feet down into a glacial valley carved by the Stehekin River. The sheer vertical face and the dramatic setting make it one of the more spectacular and adventurous falls to get to.
Because access is difficult (and there are no dogs allowed), the journey itself adds to the sense of isolation and grandeur.

2. Wallace Falls

Situated near Gold Bar, in Wallace Falls State Park.
Known for tall, single-drop cataracts. The geology is particularly interesting: the rocks are a mélange (a jolted mix) of slate, phyllite, and schist, making the landscape visually complex.
Great for hikers interested in geology, but also for anyone wanting multiple viewpoints along the trail. There are lower, middle, and upper falls, which offer different perspectives.

3. Otter Falls

Features an impressive granite outcrop. The rock is plutonic, meaning it cooled beneath the surface of the earth, which gives the area a rugged, raw visual appeal.
Access is relatively easier than many remote waterfalls, as you can reach it by paved route by passenger vehicles. That makes it a good option if you want scenic beauty without a very challenging trip.

4. Comet Falls

One of the more famous falls because of its height and setting. It plunges from a hanging valley — these are formed where tributary glaciers eroded land less deeply than the main valley, leaving a steep edge. The fall then drops over that edge.
Located in dense forest and steep terrain; the contrast between lush greens and the plunging water makes photos especially appealing. Like many remote waterfalls, dogs are not allowed.

5. Walupt Creek Falls

Lies in a wilderness area, which means fewer crowds and more raw, natural surroundings. Because of that, authorities tend not to heavily promote it, preserving its sense of wildness.
Getting there involves a bit of off-road bushwhacking from the nearest road — not super technical, but expect rugged conditions. Those who make the effort find that the beauty matches the challenge.

6. Curly Creek Falls

One of the unique waterfalls on the list because of natural arches formed over the water. The arches may be remnants of old lava tubes, which is geologically fascinating (lava tubes are tunnels formed by flowing lava).
In higher flow seasons, it has two arches; later in summer, as flow decreases, a third arch can appear. This seasonal variation makes multiple visits interesting.

7. Spray Falls

Not a straight-down plunge like many classic waterfalls; instead it flows over an amphitheater-shaped valley wall, offering a broad, spreading cascade. The setting is steep-sided, carved by ancient glaciers.
The wide, sweeping nature of the water plus the steep backdrop gives a sense of scale and openness that contrasts nicely with more confined canyon waterfalls.

Related Tips & Practical Notes

Because several of these waterfalls are in wilderness or remote forest areas, access may require planning: checking trail conditions, understanding if off-road or unmaintained paths are involved, and being sure you have proper gear (good footwear, waterproofs, etc.).
Many falls are seasonal: water flow may be far greater during snowmelt or after heavy rains; later in summer some waterfalls shrink and some features (like arches) may change. If maximizing scenery is your goal, plan for high-water months.
Consider crowds: popular falls will be busier, especially on weekends or holidays. Early morning visits or weekdays tend to provide more solitude.
Always respect signage regarding dogs, trail closures, private land, or sensitive ecological zones.
