Where White-Tailed Deer Can Be Found
White-tailed deer are widely distributed throughout most of the United States. They can be found almost everywhere except Nevada, Utah, California, Hawaii, and Alaska. However, these regions are home to their close relatives, including mule deer and black-tailed deer.
Deer Antlers Grow Extremely Quickly
The antlers of a buck, which is a male deer, are considered the fastest-growing tissue found in the animal world. During the growing season, antlers can develop at an astonishing rate before eventually hardening into the familiar structures seen on adult males.
Some Female Deer Can Grow Antlers
Although antlers are usually associated with male deer, a small number of female deer, known as does, can also develop them. Approximately one out of every 10,000 female white-tailed deer may grow antlers. In 2008, an Iowa hunter even harvested a 12-point antlered doe that was still capable of producing fawns.
Female deer with antlers generally have higher levels of testosterone, which allows this unusual growth to occur. Unlike males, whose antlers typically develop and harden before autumn, females often still have velvet-covered antlers when hunting season begins. Some may develop stronger antlers, but most are softer and less solid, although a few rare individuals grow fully hardened antlers similar to bucks.
Some Deer Have Fangs
White-tailed deer can occasionally have unusual canine teeth that resemble small fangs. While all deer have pointed canine teeth on their lower jaws, only about one in every 10,000 white-tailed deer develops upper canine teeth, making this a very uncommon feature.
Deer Communicate in Many Ways
White-tailed deer are highly social animals that communicate through different methods, including scents, body movements, and vocal sounds. Their tails also play an important role in communication. When a deer raises its tail upward, it can serve as a warning signal that danger may be nearby, alerting other deer in the area.
A Fawn’s Spots Provide Protection
The white spots on a young deer’s coat may appear noticeable to humans, but they actually work as excellent camouflage. These markings resemble patches of sunlight and shadows on the forest floor, helping fawns blend into their surroundings and remain hidden from predators.
Fawns are usually born during spring, and many young deer grow quickly enough that around 70 percent of them are able to breed during the same autumn season.
Mother Deer Rarely Leave Their Young Behind
It is extremely uncommon for a doe to abandon her fawn. Every year, people report seeing young deer alone and assume they have been left without protection. In most cases, the mother is nearby, carefully observing her baby while staying out of sight.
Female deer may intentionally leave their fawns temporarily to draw predators away or create a distraction, allowing their young to remain safe. Once the danger disappears, the mother returns to reunite with her fawn.

Seven Intriguing Realities of the Gorilla
Often described as gentle giants, gorillas hold the distinction of being the planet's largest primates. These magnificent creatures are remarkably close to humans, sharing approximately 98% of our genetic makeup. Within the species, there are four recognized subgroups: the mountain, cross river, eastern lowland, and western lowland gorilla. Currently, the western lowland variety is the most widespread but remains critically endangered, with an estimated wild population of only 300,000. These primates are celebrated for their immense power, impressive physical stature, and highly sophisticated social lives.
