Parrots are a diverse group of birds belonging to an order that contains more than 350 species. This large and varied family includes many familiar birds, such as macaws, Amazon parrots, lorikeets, lovebirds, cockatoos, and many other species.
Common Characteristics
Parrots come in a remarkable range of colors, body sizes, and behaviors, but they also share several defining characteristics.
Every parrot has a strongly curved beak that is specially designed to handle and process different kinds of food. They also have zygodactyl feet, meaning each foot contains four toes arranged with two pointing forward and two facing backward. This unusual arrangement gives parrots an excellent grip on branches and allows them to hold food securely while feeding.
Most parrots primarily consume plant-based foods, including:
fruits;
flowers;
buds;
nuts;
seeds.
Depending on the species and the food available, some parrots will also eat small animals such as insects.
Parrots are mainly associated with warm parts of the planet. The largest concentration of species occurs in Australasia, Central America, and South America, where tropical forests offer abundant food and suitable shelter.
Popularity as Companion Birds
Parrots have been kept as companion animals for hundreds of years. Popular pet species include macaws, Amazon parrots, cockatiels, parakeets, and cockatoos.
Their appeal comes from several distinctive traits. Parrots are known for being:
highly intelligent;
visually striking and colorful;
social and engaging;
capable of producing and copying complicated sounds.
Certain parrots are capable of reproducing an impressive variety of sounds, including words and phrases from human speech. The African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is regarded as one of the most accomplished vocal imitators in the animal world. Native to African rainforests, these birds can reproduce human sounds with remarkable precision, contributing to their reputation as exceptional communicators.
Threats and Conservation Challenges
Despite their popularity as companion birds, many parrot species are under significant pressure because of human activities.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) bans commercial trade involving wild-caught parrots, but continued demand has nevertheless contributed to illegal wildlife trafficking.
Certain parrot populations have declined dramatically and are now classified as endangered. The destruction of natural habitats and unauthorized capture for the wildlife trade remain two of the most serious threats facing these birds.
At the same time, some parrot species have managed to establish populations far beyond their original geographic ranges. Birds that were previously kept as pets have sometimes escaped or been deliberately released, allowing them to form self-sustaining populations in unfamiliar environments.
One example is the monk parakeet, also known as the green parakeet. This species has developed wild populations in several regions of the United States, where it now survives as a non-native bird.

A Bird Worth Getting to Know
When people think about animals considered vulnerable, familiar examples might include the magnificent Amur tiger or the powerful Indian rhinoceros. Both species continue to survive in part because of conservation work carried out by organizations such as the Wildlife Conservation Society. Protecting natural habitat is essential for the survival of threatened wildlife, including lesser-known but equally remarkable species such as Swinhoe’s pheasant (Lophura swinholi), a bird that deserves greater attention.
