Michigan’s varied landscapes, impressive natural scenery, and four distinctive seasons make hiking throughout the state an experience worth remembering.
Trails across Pure Michigan take hikers past waterfalls and quiet inland lakes, beneath towering hardwood forests glowing with autumn color, and across Great Lakes sand dunes dusted with snow during winter. Some routes wind through untouched woodland, while others pass near the shining skyscrapers of Michigan’s largest city. Whether you are looking for a short walk lasting an hour or an extended adventure across both peninsulas on the Michigan Iron Belle Trail, Michigan offers countless opportunities to escape into nature.
1. North Country National Scenic Trail – Lowell
Difficulty: Varies
Michigan contains roughly one-quarter of the North Country National Scenic Trail, a 4,600-mile route that will cross seven states and become the longest trail within the National Trail System once completed. About 1,150 miles of the route lie within Michigan, and the scenery and level of challenge change dramatically along the way.
Near the Ohio border, hikers encounter relatively level farmland, while sections in the northern Lower Peninsula pass through forests with views of rivers and lakes. Farther north, the trail reaches spectacular overlooks of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula. Popular portions include areas around Baldwin, through the Manistee National Forest between Cadillac and Manistee, and beside Lake Superior near Grand Marais.
2. Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail – Detroit
Difficulty: Varies
Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail extends for approximately 1,250 miles on foot, or about 770 miles for cyclists, and is expected to become the longest designated state trail in the United States when finished. It consists of two different routes: a more natural and rugged course designed for hikers and a shorter paved route intended for bicycles.
Both routes begin in Ironwood in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula and eventually reach Belle Isle Park in metropolitan Detroit. Access points can be found across 48 Michigan counties, providing opportunities to experience a wide range of landscapes, from white pine forests and the Mackinac Bridge to the busy streets of downtown Detroit.
3. Greenstone Ridge Trail – Isle Royale National Park
Difficulty: Hard
Following the Greenstone Ridge Trail from Windigo at the western end of Isle Royale to Rock Harbor in the east takes hikers across approximately 43 miles of Isle Royale National Park, one of the least visited national parks in the Lower 48.
The trail is especially demanding because of its isolated location and primitive camping conditions. Once on the route, hikers need to filter their own drinking water. In return, the Greenstone Ridge provides remarkable views across northern Lake Superior, including dense white pine forests, exposed granite formations, enormous stretches of open water and, with some luck, sightings of moose.
4. Lakeshore-North Country Trail – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Difficulty: Moderate
The Lakeshore Trail at Pictured Rocks follows the dramatic Lake Superior shoreline, passing crashing waves, the tall white Au Sable Light Station, Chapel Rock, and the Spray and Bridalveil Falls. Its northern section overlaps with the North Country National Scenic Trail, creating an exceptionally scenic hiking route.
Visitors can access the trail from Grand Marais, Twelvemile Beach, Miners Castle, or Munising for shorter day hikes. Those seeking a longer adventure can complete the entire 42-mile route and camp along the trail.
5. Pyramid Point Trail – Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Difficulty: Moderate
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore contains roughly 100 miles of hiking paths, ranging from easy nature trails to routes circling North and South Manitou Islands. The challenging Dunes Hiking Trail begins at the bottom of the famous Dune Climb, but Pyramid Point may offer one of the most rewarding experiences in the area.
The approximately 3-mile route passes through meadows filled with wildflowers and forests dominated by paper birch before crossing rolling sand dunes. A short side trail leads to a spectacular overlook above Lake Michigan, where hikers can enjoy peaceful views even during the busy summer season.
6. Big Carp River Trail – Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
Difficulty: Hard
Covering around 60,000 acres in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula and containing nearly 90 miles of trails, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is the state’s largest and most isolated state park.
For an introduction to some of the park’s most impressive scenery, take the 9.6-mile Big Carp River Trail. The route climbs from the Lake Superior shoreline through a beautiful valley toward Lake of the Clouds.
With additional time, hikers can continue onto the Escarpment Trail, which follows a ridge overlooking Lake of the Clouds, or take the North Mirror Lake Trail toward Mirror Lake, the park’s highest lake at an elevation of 1,532 feet.
7. Port Crescent Trails – Port Crescent State Park
Difficulty: Easy
Some of the most attractive hiking routes in Michigan’s Thumb region can be found at Port Crescent State Park along Lake Huron.
Built on the former site of the prosperous lumbering and fishing community of Port Crescent, the park contains a 2.5-mile collection of trails. These paths overlook Saginaw Bay and provide views of the Pinnebog River and Channel, windswept Lake Huron dunes, and a chimney monument that recalls the area’s historic lumber industry.
8. Potawatomi, Algonquin and Chippewa Trails – Negwegon State Park
Difficulty: Easy
Covering 1,800 acres, Negwegon State Park is considered one of the most scenic parks along the Lake Huron shoreline. It lies approximately midway between Harrisville and Alpena.
Three interconnected loop trails, named for Native American tribes, lead hikers into the interior of the park and toward Negwegon’s South Point. The relatively easy 5-mile route offers beautiful rewards, including an undeveloped shoreline, secluded coves and soft sugar-sand beaches. Because the park is relatively remote, hikers may have much of the scenery to themselves.
9. Great Warren Dune Trail – Warren Dunes State Park
Difficulty: Moderate
Warren Dunes State Park is a popular destination for people escaping Chicago’s summer heat, but its scenery becomes especially striking during autumn. The park’s oak and hickory forests turn vivid shades of yellow, orange and red.
The 4-mile Great Warren Dune Trail provides an excellent way to experience this southwest Michigan landscape. The loop moves through hardwood woodland, climbs over large sand dunes and eventually reveals an expansive view of the golden Lake Michigan shoreline.
10. Penosha Trail – Brighton Recreation Area
Difficulty: Moderate
Located within easy reach of metropolitan Detroit, Brighton Recreation Area provides a peaceful natural retreat in southeastern Michigan.
The 5-mile Penosha Trail forms a picturesque loop beneath maple and oak trees, passing through rolling terrain and around inland lakes. During summer, the wooded route offers a refreshing break from the heat and activity of the city. In autumn, the surrounding hardwood forests become especially impressive as the foliage changes into brilliant shades of red, orange and gold.
11. Grand River Trail, Grand River County Park – William Burchfield Park
Difficulty: Moderate
This 4-mile loop follows the Grand River, Michigan’s longest river, through Ingham County. Located about 10 miles south of Lansing, Grand River County Park and Burchfield Park sit beside one another, forming an attractive riverside natural area close to the state capital.
The trail follows a winding course over river bluffs and through wetlands, passes historic farms that are more than a century old, and travels beneath mature hardwood trees. The scenery becomes particularly beautiful during the fall when the forest canopy takes on its seasonal colors.
12. Au Sable River Foot Trail – Hartwick Pines State Park
Difficulty: Easy
Located in northern Michigan, Hartwick Pines protects a rare stand of old-growth white pine forest, representing the type of woodland that was once heavily reduced by the logging industry.
The Au Sable River Foot Trail allows visitors to see these impressive mature trees at close range while crossing the Au Sable River twice along the route. Those with extra time can also explore the Old Growth Forest Trail. At only one mile long, this shorter walk leads to a reconstructed logging camp and the Logging Museum, providing additional insight into Michigan’s lumbering history.
